Beyond the Number

Is financial freedom just a net worth statement or something deeper? Shanta Lee unpacks what true financial independence feels like (and looks like) in real life. Together, we’ll explore the new measures of wealth, how to spot your progress, and ways to define your own version of freedom as a couple.

Chapter 1

When the Number Isn't Enough

Shanta Lee

Let me introduce to you Chris and Emily. After years of spreadsheets, late-night money talks, and all those little sacrifices, finally hit their magic number. You know, the one their advisor circled in red years ago—the “freedom” number. Chris is practically glowing, waving the net worth statement around like it’s a golden ticket. And Emily, well, she smiles, but inside? She’s just... flat. Not sad, not excited—just kind of empty. And I can’t tell you how common that is. I mean, we spend so much time chasing these milestones, thinking, “Once I get there, I’ll feel free. I’ll feel different.” But then you arrive, and it’s like, “Wait, is this it? Is freedom just a number on a screen?” I’ve seen this play out so many times—heck, I’ve felt it myself. We expect fireworks, but sometimes it’s more like a quiet Tuesday. So, let me ask you: What do you expect to feel after you hit a financial goal? Is your vision of freedom really about the money, or is it about something deeper? Because if you’re listening to this, I’m guessing you want more than just a fat account balance. You want to feel alive, connected, maybe even a little bit magical. And that’s what we’re diving into today.

Chapter 2

New Measures of Freedom

Shanta Lee

Now, if you’ve been with me since the beginning, you’ll remember the be do have framework we talked about in Episode 1. It’s not just a cute slogan—it’s the backbone of real transformation. When you start with be—your identity—then do—the systems and habits—and finally have—the results, something shifts. And here’s the thing: the real signs of freedom aren’t always on a spreadsheet. They show up in your body, your relationships, your day-to-day. Like, maybe you notice you’re not waking up at 3 a.m. worrying about bills. Or your money talks with your partner are less like cage matches and more like, I don’t know, jazz improv—collaborative, creative, even fun. That’s freedom. Or maybe, like Emily, you realize you can take a six-month sabbatical and the world won’t end. That’s freedom, too. I remember when I finally stopped obsessing over my own spreadsheets—yes, I was that person—and started measuring my wealth by how much peace I felt in the morning, or how many choices I had in a week. That’s when things got real. It’s not about the number, it’s about the life you’re living because of it. And honestly, that quiet confidence? That’s the gold.

Chapter 3

Defining and Living Your Freedom

Shanta Lee

So, how do you actually define what freedom means for you and your partner? This is where it gets juicy. I want you to sit down together—maybe with coffee, maybe with wine, whatever works—and ask: What does financial freedom look and feel like for us? Not just, “We want a million dollars,” but, “We want to feel calm when we talk about money,” or, “We want the option to take a year off and travel.” Get specific. And as you grow, your definition will change. That’s normal. Your becoming Board—the one we talked about in Episode 2—should evolve, too. Maybe the images that once meant “security” now mean “generosity” or “adventure.” Maybe the words shift from “control” to “impact.” That’s a sign you’re growing. So, what anxieties are you ready to leave behind? What new possibilities are opening up as you step into your Wealth Creator identity? Write them down. Talk about them. Let them breathe. Because the more you define it, the more real it becomes.

Chapter 4

Embodying Financial Freedom

Shanta Lee

Okay, let’s get practical. It’s one thing to talk about freedom, but how do you actually live it, day to day? Start with your habits. Are you spending intentionally, or just on autopilot? Are you making time for regular check-ins—not just about bills, but about your vision and values? Maybe you set aside Sunday mornings for a “wealth creator coffee date,” or you keep a gratitude journal where you jot down the freedoms you’re experiencing, big or small. And don’t underestimate the power of visuals. I’m a huge fan of vision boards—yes, even if you think they’re a little woo-woo. Or maybe you plan an experience that embodies your sense of freedom, like a mini-retreat or a day off just because you can. These rituals and reminders keep you anchored to what really matters, so you don’t get lost chasing the next number.

Chapter 5

Sharing and Sustaining Your Financial Freedom

Shanta Lee

Here’s the last piece—don’t do this alone. Freedom grows when it’s shared. Find your people, whether it’s a couple of friends, a mastermind group, or even just a trusted mentor. Share your goals, your wins, your stumbles. That accountability and encouragement? It’s priceless. And keep learning—read books, listen to podcasts (hey, you’re already here!), go to workshops. The more you expand your understanding of wealth, the more you can adapt and refine your own definition of freedom. And if you’re thinking about legacy, start now. Maybe it’s a giving plan, maybe it’s mentoring someone else, maybe it’s just modeling a new way of being for your kids or your community. Whatever it is, let your freedom ripple out. That’s how you make it last. Alright, that’s a wrap for today. Next time, we’ll dig even deeper into sustaining this momentum and building a legacy that feels as good as it looks. Until then, keep living your version of freedom—whatever that means for you.
